Here’s What to Expect When Wearing Braces

It is never too late to have a beautiful smile or a perfect bite. If you have decided it is time to get braces, you should know what to expect. At the end of the day, this can make things easier for you and the people around you.

To help you get through your first Orthodontics treatment journey, here are the things to expect:

It will not hurt when braces are put on

You should not be afraid because it will not hurt when braces are put on. The process usually entails the following:

  • Cleaning: orthodontists will start by cleaning the teeth thoroughly and then drying it.
  • Gluing: after cleaning, brackets will be installed and it is usually done with the help of special glue. During this process, you will see the use of blue light. You should not panic because this only hastens the sticking of brackets on every tooth.
  • Sliding: this process will tackle the back molars where orthodontists place metal bands around it. Like brackets, metal bands also use glue with blue light. Remember that in this process, the orthodontist will twist or pressure it. If you feel a pinching sensation or if it is uncomfortable for you, tell the orthodontist.
  • Attaching: the last part is attaching the wires to the brackets. You must know that small rubber bands are wrapped around the bracket to hold the wire. The best thing about this is you get to choose any color you want.

It will only hurt after

You should expect soreness after a few hours. Keep in mind that this mild pain can last for a few days. Aside from that, you should also expect pain after an adjustment but you can manage it by taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

Additionally, you should expect small sores on your gums and lips in the first few days. When your mouth gets used to the brackets and wires, mouth sores will be infrequent. To alleviate discomfort, you can rinse with warm saltwater.

Your teeth will feel loose

Do not be afraid when you feel loose teeth. Remember that for the teeth to move in the right place, it needs to relax first. After the braces are removed, teeth will feel robust again.

You should change what you eat

Soft foods are recommended in the first few days. You can start with mashed potatoes, soups, shakes, macaroni and cheese and many more. Try to avoid foods that are hard to bite and chew because it will only make things worse.

You should see your orthodontist regularly

After the braces are put on, you still need to see your orthodontist regularly. This is to check the progress of your teeth and make necessary adjustments. The follow-up visits will depend but it usually happens every 8 to 10 weeks.

You can continue doing normal activities

Even with braces on, you can continue doing things like playing sports, exercising and many more. If you are playing a contact sport, make sure that you always wear a mouth guard to protect your moving teeth.

It will stay with you for 18-24 months

You should expect the braces to stay with you for 18-24 months. This is the standard length of the treatment with conventional metal braces. If you consider Invisalign, it is also between 18-24 months.
